The Evolution of Beauty
Jul 27th
Scientists from the University of Helsinki have recently claimed that women are becoming more beautiful with each successive generation. The theory goes that attractive women tend to have more children than less attractive women and more of these children are girls than boys. This means that attractive genes are passed on resulting in more beautiful girls or girls who are more beautiful? I’m still not sure but one thing the article was clear on was than men aren’t getting any better looking.
You would think that this seeing as this generation of men is more inclined to use moisturizer and care what we look like we would be better looking than the previous generation. I guess we should give up trying to compete and just enjoy being surrounded by beautiful women.
“If more attractive parents have more daughters and if physical attractiveness is heritable, it logically follows that women over many generations gradually become more physically attractive on average than men.”
Markus Jokela from the University of Helsinki designed the study which involved assessing the attractiveness of 2,000 American men and women. Researchers also looked at how many children those in the study had and confirmed that those considered more attractive were more likely to have female offspring. The eventual outcome of this is that each new generation contains more attractive women (or women who are considered more attractive, it’s a very subjective thing beauty and very hard to measure).
Study shows that size 8 women have more sex
Jan 5th
Size eight (US size 0) women on average have more sex than larger women. A recent study has shown that slimmer women have sex more often with 60% having had sex within the last week. 50% of the women asked who wear a size 12 said that they had had sex in the previous week.
The study also found that 12% of those with a high BMI (body mass index) hadn’t had sex for over a year. They suggested that those who were slimmer had more confidence and felt better about their bodies.

The 10 most annoying phrases.
Nov 7th
Researchers at Oxford University have compiled a list of the ten most annoying phrases in the English language. The phrases were monitored via a database called the Oxford University Corpus which keeps track of words being misused within books, magazines, the internet and the media.
The top ten are:
1 – At the end of the day
2 – Fairly unique
3 – I personally
4 – At this moment in time
5 – With all due respect
6 – Absolutely
7 – It’s a nightmare
8 – Shouldn’t of
9 – 24/7
10 – It’s not rocket science
My least favourite is ‘fairly unique’ which often causes me to shout at my television in outrage. Jeremy Butterfield, the author of a book about misused language Damp Squid, says that
“We grow tired of anything that is repeated too often – an anecdote, a joke, a mannerism – and the same seems to happen with some language.”
I have to agree. I once new someone who was unable to mutter a sentence without the use of at least one meaningless phrase such as ‘I’m not being funny but…’.
At the end of the day people literally, at this moment in time shouldn’t use these words 24/7. With all due respect It’s not rocket science.
