Polaroid Film Back From The Dead
Oct 13th
Polaroid has announced that they will begin producing their iconic instant film once again. The company plans to bring back their digital and analogue ranges including the 600 instant film they are most famous for. The company’s instant film was gradually phased out throughout 2008 although it was still possible to find limited supplies of it.

When the Polaroid corporation collapsed (for the second time) it’s remaining assets were bought out by Summit Global who will be producing the new cameras. The new line of cameras will be produced in China and will be branded as Polaroid. An instant digital camera is also planned although details are vague so far presumably it will have an on-board printer similar to the bluetooth printer previously released by Polaroid.
The instant film will be produced by The Impossible Project which was set up by photographer Florian Kaps in order to save the film from dying out. Kaps managed to convince Polaroid to let him manufacture the film with the help of Ilford and even took over the factory in which it was made. Kaps managed to get $2.6 million in funding in order to save instant film.
The Impossible Project is proud and excited that its ambitions and all the relentless work that has already been invested are now becoming the foundation for Polaroid’s comeback as a producer of Instant Cameras.
The first commercial instant camera was created by Edwin Land who co-founded Polaroid. His design, the Land Camera, first went on sale in 1947.
C’était un rendez-vous
Jun 16th
C’était un rendez-vous is a1976 short film by Claude Lelouch that was shot in one take using a camera mounted on a car’s bumper. It is just over 8 minutes long (the length of a reel of 35mm film) and features some pretty nifty driving through the streets of Paris at well over 100mph. Lelouch was arrested after the film’s release although at the time he claimed it was not him driving the car but a F1 driver he knew. During the film the driver mounts the curb and drives the wrong way down one way streets as the sun rises over Paris. The car used was a Mercedes-Benz 450SEL although the poster for the film shows a Ferrari.
The film caused some controversy due to the reckless nature of the driving involved. The streets were not closed and it was more through luck than judgment that no pedestrians got hurt. It has been remastered and release on DVD but you can see it in it’s entirety below.
The Film-maker With A Camera In His Eye Socket.
Mar 16th
Rob Spence, 36, from Toronto damaged his eye in a shooting accident when he was young. He is now in the process of having a glass eye built which will contain a camera and transmitter. Mr Spence will then be able to film everything he sees. This will be the first time a hidden camera has be worn within an eye socket.
Mr Spence has said that whilst people are generally in favour of arms and legs being replaced by hi-tech devices they are less keen when it comes to eyes: “The closer I get to putting this camera eye in, the more freaked out people are about me.”
This raises interesting questions as Mr Spence will not gain any increased access to people private lives, it’s just that he will have the ability to film what he sees. As what we saw last week begins to fade in our memories what the film-makers sees will be recorded exactly as it was.
The Cyborg plans to make a documentary and says that he will ask the permission of everybody he films in a private setting. His camera was created by OmniVision who say that it is a step towards the production of a cyber eye that transmits directly into the wearers brain.
Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson sign up for Iron Man 2.
Mar 12th
Walking fashion disaster and reformed drug fiend Mickey Rourke has reportedly signed up to play a part in Iron Man 2. The star is due to play Whiplash who is based on the Crimson Dynamo from the original comic book. The Crimson Dynamo is an amour wearing Russian agent and not very subtle reference to Communism.
Rourke had originally turned down an offer of $250,000 to appear in the film as this would only just cover the cost of clothing his tiny dog. He has since been offered an amount more suited to his needs.
Emily Blunt was originally due to play the Black Widow AKA Natasha Romanoff in the film but had to leave the cast to to scheduling problems. Scarlett Johansson is now expected to play the part. This could be a big change for Johansson who normally seems to play a slightly self involved blonde tease.
Some have said that Olga Kurylenko would be better suited to the role of the Black Widow perhaps because she is from the Ukraine and bears more of a resemblance to the character.
