Ron Asheton the guitarist with The Stooges has died aged 60. Asheton who lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan is believed to have died from a heart attack. A toxicology report has yet to be published. The guitarist was found on his couch by police officers after his personal assistant had been unable to contact him for several days.

Ron Asheton was a founding member of The Stooges in 1967. Ron’s brother Scott was also a member of the band. The band had reunited in 2003 after 34 years apart. They released an album in 2007 called The Weirdness to mixed reviews. Pitchfork gave the album 1 star saying “one of rock’n'roll’s most infallible discographies has now been saddled with an unwanted stepchild”.

In other sad Stooges news Iggy Pop has met a fate worse than death. He is featuring in a car insurance advert in the UK. The over exposed wrinkly old rocker stars in the £25 million ad campaign for Swiftcover.com urging viewers to ‘get a life’. Iggy was once one of the most exciting frontmen in rock but has now become a parody of his self, shilling insurance like than nodding dog but with less dignity (see below).
